The Sound of Supper Introduction

by Mary Baidenmann

The Sound of Supper is a survival story wrapped in music, silence, grit, and grace.

Lizzy Jean starts as a quiet teen—awkward at school, bullied by her father, and haunted by panic attacks that land her in the hospital. She’s not alone there. Her little brother Billy and her school friend Bobby—who she’s been furious with for weeks—are by her side when everything changes. A stranger kidnaps all three, dragging them deep into the forest.

What follows is a raw, relentless fight to survive.

Lizzy draws strength from unexpected places: Mama’s silence, Daddy’s sermons, Mama and Nurse Rachael’s voices in her head, and the wisdom of Uncle Harry who taught her piano, and of Oralee, a mystery woman—her presence lingers in Lizzy’s memory like a hymn. Crickets sing in the background as Lizzy learns to listen to the forest, to her instincts, and to the voices that shaped her.

Each chapter pushes Lizzy further—from terrified girl to fierce protector. She outsmarts her captor, navigates bear trails and cougar dens, and risks everything to find Billy and Bobby. Her anger toward Bobby softens in a quiet moment of handholding. Her love for Billy drives her through thorns and fire.

By Chapter 27, Lizzy has faced down predators, both human and wild. She’s trapped her kidnapper on a cliff ledge, found the boys alive in a hidden cave, and reunited with them in a flood of tears and blankets and tea. But just as safety seems near, gunshots echo from the farmhouse.

Lizzy stands at the cave mouth, scanning the valley, knowing she must go back down and face whatever waits.

And only half the story has been told.

The Sound of Supper is a haunting tale of survival, betrayal, and the triumph of a child who refuses to disappear.
